moncon was a Web Monetization paywall that let users pay a few cents per article using Interledger, while validating credentials (age, country) with Zero-Knowledge Proofs. GDPR compliant by design.
Newspapers and media still struggle with the same problem: ads annoy users, and full subscriptions are too much for one article. moncon let content creators sell access per piece for cents, with payments routed via Interledger and identity claims proved without revealing the underlying data.
Cross-currency, low-fee payments routed over ILP. No card networks, no subscriptions, no chargebacks.
Prove you are over 18, in a specific country, or hold a credential — without exposing the underlying data.
Self-Sovereign Identity model. The user holds their credentials in a wallet, not the publisher's database.
Publisher JS library: tag the content you want to monetize, set a price, and let the framework gate it via QR.
React dashboard with metrics, content tags, country and credential rules. Block or monetize at the tag level.
Progressive Web App holding credentials, scanning QR codes, and signing micropayments.
The full framework was developed under the LEDGER programme and released open source. The monorepo contains the dashboard, API, publisher SDK and wallet PWA.
Main monorepo. Dashboard, API, Publisher JS and the mobile wallet PWA. Built with NodeJS, React, Zenroom and MongoDB.
View repository → PackagePublisher dashboard in React. Block or monetize content by tags, see metrics, set credential rules per country or audience.
Open package → PackageNodeJS + Zenroom API. Microservices powering the dashboard, the wallet and the publisher JS, with cryptographic ops handled by Zenroom.
Open package → PackageJavaScript library that publishers drop into their site. Tag content, set a price, gate via QR + verifiable credentials.
Open package → PackageMobile-first Progressive Web App. Stores W3C Verifiable Credentials, scans publisher QR codes and signs Interledger micropayments.
Open package → GitLab mirrorOriginal GitLab home of the framework with the LEDGER project history, issues and deliverables.
Open on GitLab →moncon was a thin layer over standards that already existed. Web Monetization for the payment trigger, Interledger for routing, W3C Verifiable Credentials for identity and Zenroom for cryptography.
moncon was selected and funded by the LEDGER programme, an EU H2020 initiative supporting human-centric decentralised technology projects with privacy and ethics at their core.
Developed inside the LEDGER programme of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation framework. Fully compliant with H2020 ethical guidelines and GDPR.
